In short
- Polish holds on a clean, dry, oil-free nail. Do not soak your hands before painting.
- The order never changes: base coat, two thin coats of colour, top coat. Seal the free edge of the nail with every layer.
- Regular polish applied properly lasts five to seven days; refresh the top coat every two days.
- A gel manicure lasts two to three weeks, but never peel it off: soak it off or have it removed, and put sunscreen on your hands before the lamp.
Neat nails are one of the details that finish a look. Painting them seems simple, yet the result is often disappointing, and the reason is nearly always the same: a rushed job. Here is how to paint your nails so the polish looks even and stays on.
What you need
- Polish remover and lint-free cotton pads.
- A glass or fine-grit file.
- A wooden or rubber cuticle pusher.
- Base coat, colour and top coat.
- A thin brush or cotton bud dipped in remover for mistakes.
- Cuticle oil to finish.
How to paint your nails, step by step
- Give it time. Hurry is the main cause of a failed manicure.
- Remove old polish and wipe every nail with remover even if it looks bare: oil from creams sits on the nail plate and stops polish gripping.
- File in one direction, from the edge towards the centre. Sawing back and forth makes nails split.
- Push the cuticles back gently. Do not cut them: they protect the nail from infection, and cut cuticles grow back rougher.
- Wash and dry your hands to remove dust, then wipe the nails with remover once more.
- Base coat. It helps colour grip and stops dark shades staining the nail.
- Colour in three strokes. Wipe one side of the brush on the bottle neck, place a drop in the middle of the nail near the cuticle, push it towards the cuticle and pull to the tip, then one stroke left and one right.
- Two thin coats, letting the first dry. Thin layers give an even colour and last longer than one thick one.
- Seal the edge. Run the brush along the free edge of the nail with each layer.
- Top coat, then clean up any polish on the skin.
- Let it dry without doing anything else. Polish is fully hard after about an hour.
- Cuticle oil once the polish is dry, not before.
How to make nail polish last longer
- Skip the soak. Nails swell in water like skin does. When they shrink back, polish lifts. If you do soak, wait an hour before painting.
- Always wipe with remover first, even on bare nails.
- Never skip base and top coat. Refreshing the top coat every two days is the whole secret.
- Thin coats, and no more than three. Thick layers do not dry through and peel.
- Cap the free edge so polish does not chip from the tips.
Beyond that: wear gloves for washing up, do not use nails as tools, and oil the cuticles daily, because a dry nail breaks and takes the polish with it.
Why polish chips: common mistakes
| What happens | Cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Polish peels off in a sheet | Oily or damp nail | Wipe with remover; do not paint straight after a bath |
| Tips chip | The free edge was not sealed | Run the brush along the tip with each coat |
| Bubbles | A shaken bottle, a thick coat | Roll the bottle between your palms; paint thin |
| Sheet marks | Polish was dry only on the surface | Do not paint right before bed |
| Yellowed nails | Dark polish without base coat | Always use a base; take breaks |
Gel nails: what to know before you choose them
Gel polish hardens under a UV or LED lamp rather than in air, so it sets in a minute and lasts two to three weeks. It is convenient, but gel has its own rules.
- Protect your skin from the lamp. The lamp emits UVA. Dermatologists advise applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen to your hands beforehand or wearing fingerless gloves.
- Do not peel gel off. You strip the top layer of the nail with it, and nails thin. Soak it off with acetone-soaked pads wrapped in foil, or have it removed.
- Take breaks. A week or two without a coating, with oil, does nails good.
- Watch your skin. Itching, redness or blisters around the nails after gel can mean an allergy to acrylates. It develops more often when uncured gel touches the skin, so at home work very neatly and use the lamp made for that gel.
- Check the ingredients. Since 1 September 2025 the EU has banned TPO, a photoinitiator once common in gel polish, from cosmetics. It is still permitted in some other markets, including the US, so check what is in a kit you bought abroad or online.
| Regular polish | Gel polish | |
|---|---|---|
| Lasts | 5–7 days | 2–3 weeks |
| Dries | About an hour to harden fully | 30–60 seconds under the lamp |
| Removal | Remover, one minute | Acetone soak, 10–15 minutes |
| Suits | Frequent colour changes, sensitive skin | Holidays, hard-working hands |
Painting toenails
The same rules apply with different prep. Cut toenails straight across without rounding the corners, so they do not grow in. Use a toe separator. Polish lasts longer on toes than on fingers, so take it off every few weeks and look at the nails: under constant colour it is easy to miss changes.
The nails expected at castings and shoots
Models follow a simple rule: short, clean nails with no colour, or with clear or nude polish. If a shot needs a bright colour, the client applies it, and chipped red polish shows in a photograph better than any jewellery. Long extensions do not suit most jobs.
Practical details like these are part of model training; see also how to prepare for a model casting. If you are choosing colours for yourself rather than for a casting, an image consultation works out your colour type, which holds for polish, lipstick and clothes alike. What to wear to the party you are doing your nails for is in the dress code guide.
Frequently asked questions
How long does nail polish take to dry?
The surface is touch-dry in 10 to 15 minutes, but polish hardens fully in about an hour. A quick-dry top coat shortens that.
How many coats of nail polish should you apply?
One base coat, two thin coats of colour and one top coat. More than three coats of colour dry badly and peel.
Do gel nails damage your nails?
The gel itself does not. Peeling it off and rough filing thin the nail. With soak-off removal and breaks, nails stay healthy.
Can you do gel nails at home?
Yes, with a kit made for your market and its matching lamp, applied to the nail only and removed by soaking. If itching or a rash appears, stop and see a doctor.
Why does my nail polish chip the next day?
Usually an oily or damp nail, a coat that was too thick or an unsealed edge. Wipe nails with remover first and paint thin.
Do nails need a break from polish?
Not from regular polish if you use a base coat. After several gel manicures in a row, a week or two bare helps nails recover.
