Perfume guide

How to wear perfume

Perfume notes

A perfume unfolds in three layers. Top notes (citrus, herbs) last the first 15 minutes, heart notes (flowers, spices) a few hours, and base notes (woods, amber, musk) the longest. Judge a perfume by how it smells after an hour, not straight away.

How to make perfume last longer

  • Spray onto moisturised skin: dry skin absorbs scent faster.
  • Don't rub your wrists together – it breaks the top notes.
  • Spray clothes or hair too: fabric holds scent longer than skin.
  • Keep the bottle somewhere cool and dark, not in the bathroom.

Where to spray perfume

Pulse points are warmer, so scent carries better: wrists, behind the ears, the neck, the inside of the elbows and the backs of the knees. In cold weather also the scarf; in hot weather only where skin stays out of the sun.

EDP, EDT, parfum

Parfum / extrait20–30 %6–8 h and more
Eau de parfum (EDP)15–20 %about 5–7 h
Eau de toilette (EDT)5–15 %about 3–4 h
Eau de cologne (EDC)2–4 %about 2 h

Share of aromatic compounds; wear time depends on the notes and the skin.

Perfume layering

Pair one simple scent (musk, vanilla or citrus) with a more complex one. Spray the heavier first and the lighter on top. A good rule: pick neighbours on the fragrance wheel.

Summer and winter perfume

In summer go fresh – citrus, water and green scents, an EDT and fewer sprays. In winter amber and woody scents, an EDP or parfum: in the cold they open slowly and last longer.

How we pick the scent

We pick the family from how the weather will feel from 8 am to 10 pm and how humid it will be. Heat speeds up evaporation – more projection, shorter wear – so fresh scents and fewer sprays. Humidity carries scent; cold, dry air mutes it, so richer amber and woody scents work. Families follow Michael Edwards' Fragrance Wheel.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

01How many sprays of perfume?

Two or three is usually enough. On hot or humid days one or two, on cold days three or four, one of them on your clothes.

02Why doesn't my perfume last?

Usually dry skin, rubbing, a light concentration (EDT, EDC) or heat. Moisturiser, spraying clothes and an EDP help.

03EDP vs EDT: what's the difference?

An EDP (eau de parfum) has 15–20% aromatic compounds and lasts about 5–7 hours; an EDT (eau de toilette) 5–15% and about 3–4 hours.
