Weave or knit · Satin weave

Satin fabric

A weave, not a fibre: it can be silk, polyester, acetate or viscose. Threads float over several crosswise threads, so one side is very smooth and shiny and the other matte.

How it feels

Slippery, shiny, with a liquid drape.

Season: Spring and autumn; next to skin it can feel stuffy in the heat.

What it's used for

Evening dresses, slip skirts, blouses, pyjamas.

A satin skirt with a sweater or tee for day; a satin dress for evening. Matte textures beside shiny satin look polished.

Pros

  • Luxurious shine
  • Gentle on hair and skin (pillowcases)

Cons

  • Snags easily and shows every crease

Care: a typical label

Always follow your own garment's label – blends and finishes change the care.

How it's constructed

Satin weave. Long floating threads cover the surface – smooth and shiny, but quicker to snag.

A little history

Satin is named after the Chinese port of Zaitun (Quanzhou). In medieval Europe it was a fabric of the nobility.

How to recognise it

Read the surface: diagonal lines mean twill, shiny and slippery means satin, a raised nap means pile, sideways stretch means a knit.

Sustainability

A weave's footprint depends on the fibre it's made from – check the composition on the label.

When buying

The same weave behaves differently in different fibres: silk and polyester satin look alike, but only silk breathes. Always read the composition.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

01What is satin?

A weave, not a fibre: it can be silk, polyester, acetate or viscose. Threads float over several crosswise threads, so one side is very smooth and shiny and the other matte.

02Is satin a natural fabric?

It's a weave or knit – whether it's natural depends on the fibre it's made from.

03Does satin shrink?

A little: satin can shrink 1–2%, mostly in the first wash.

04Is satin breathable?

Only so-so: satin doesn't absorb moisture, it moves it along – fine for sport, less so next to skin on a hot day.
