What to wear to a funeral

At a funeral, clothes express respect, not style. In Lithuania and most of Europe the traditional colour is black; navy, charcoal and dark brown also work. Choose simple cuts, covered-up clothes and comfortable shoes – part of the ceremony often takes place outdoors, at the cemetery.

What to wear to a funeral

For women

  • A dark below-the-knee dress or suit
  • Dark trousers with a blouse and jacket
  • A dark coat in the cold months
  • Closed, comfortable low-heeled shoes – you'll walk cemetery paths

For men

  • A dark suit – black, navy or charcoal
  • A white or pale shirt
  • A dark, plain tie
  • Black leather shoes

What to avoid

  • Bright colours and prints
  • Sequins, low necklines, short skirts
  • Sportswear and jeans
  • Lots of jewellery and strong perfume

Tips

  • If the family asks for a particular colour (sometimes the deceased's favourite), follow the request.
  • In winter, warm dark layers: it feels colder at the cemetery than you expect.
  • For children, dark, neat but comfortable clothes.

For family and close mourners

The closest family usually dresses most strictly – all black. Other guests may choose dark, muted colours. Often there's a wake first, then a funeral mass and burial at the cemetery, so clothes must work indoors and outdoors for several hours. Women may want a wrap or jacket to cover their shoulders in church.

Frequently asked

01Do you have to wear black to a funeral?

02Can you wear jeans to a funeral?

Better not. If you have nothing else, choose dark, clean jeans with a dark jacket or sweater.

03What to wear to a funeral in summer?

Dark, light fabrics – linen, cotton, crepe. Short sleeves are fine, but avoid very revealing clothes.

Dark trousers, a white or dark shirt, a dark sweater or jacket and black leather shoes.
